Paint and Assembly Quality Standards

The goal is to create a set of criteria so that buyers and sellers have a common language to refer to the quality of the item in question. As with any subjective choice, finding words to accurately convey an aesthetic judgement is open to criticism. Even so, there is a strong need for this type of convention in our hobby. Rest assured, The Geek is fearless in the face of criticism, when fellow hobbyists are in need. After some research, 2HG developed the standards listed below. They are intentionally broad, but specific enough to accomplish our purpose. Even so, The Geek is always interested to hear your opinion.

Assembly Quality Levels

  • Basic - beginner to inexperienced level model builder. Visible mistakes may include misfitting joints, excess adhesive, cutting tool marks, gaps between parts, or other visible flaws.
  • Standard - the model is assembled according to the instructions. The model displays well-fitting joints, minimal excess adhesive, clean cuts, minimal gaps between parts, and a clean appearance.
  • Advanced - the model shows additional detailed work to create a more realistic, stable or usable model. Expected features include mold lines being removed, gaps being filled, working hinges and gun barrels drilled and cleaned. Other work might include stabilizing pins in joints, magnetized equipment options, unique parts ‘kit-bashed’ for aesthetic appeal and other features or custom work intended to enhance realistic detail.

Paint Quality Levels

  • Primed – at least one smooth complete coat of primer paint.
  • Tournament Minimum – every section of the model is painted and a minimum of 3 colors are used. The base is covered with flock, talus or textured paint.
  • Tabletop Standard – each major feature on the model is painted to distinguish it from the background. A suitable color palette is used to convey a complete theme. The brush strokes demonstrate an honest attempt to “stay inside the lines”. The base is covered with flock, talus or textured paint.
  • Advanced Level – exceeds a Tabletop Standard with a noticeably higher level of brush stroke accuracy and greater detail in each painted feature. Some advanced level techniques may be visible such as shading, edge highlights, non-metal metallics, wet blending, weathering, dry brushing, glazing, dark lining, feathering, freehand, object source lighting, washing, etc. The base shows a level of work beyond the minimum coverage requirement for Tabletop Standard.
  • Showcase Level – exceeds advanced level work through the precise execution of multiple advanced level techniques, that serve to convey a distinguishable artistic vision for the model. The base will further illustrate this vision through thematic use of materials to portray the model within a chosen environment.

Quality Integrity To ensure compliance with these standards, we have a warning and consequence system. The first time a buyer complains about the quality of a model, not being what was represented, 2HG will arbitrate the transaction. If a violation occurs, a warning will be issued. If another violation occurs, all listings from the seller will have to be approved by 2HG before they appear on the site.
